Carrington Aged Care (Carrington) runs four aged care homes in Victoria offering low and high level care with some of the best facilities in the Melbourne area. It is a medium-sized family business with over 250 employees, founded and run by the Gunn family.
Managing a Growing Workforce
Carrington looked to expand their care facilities in 2008 and needed a software solution to help manage its growing workforce. All rostering, timesheet and payroll processes were being done manually and after reviewing several workforce management products, RosterLive was identified as the best solution. Chief Financial Officer Jon Augustin noticed immediate process improvements and time savings using RosterLive:
“Before we implemented RosterLive, all of our rosters, timesheets and transfer of information to payroll was done manually. Timesheets were being completed inaccurately by staff and there were errors in payroll.
It used to take us five days to manually go through timesheets, check them, calculate award conditions and then input them into our payroll system. Since we’ve been using RosterLive, it’s five times faster — it now takes about one day to do everything.”
Friendly and Clear
Carrington chose to implement RosterLive in stages, initially rolling out one facility before the other three sites. Augustin was pleased with how the implementation was handled: “The implementation and training we received from RosterLive was fantastic. The staff were very friendly and clear with instructions and it was very easy to pick up and use. All the deadlines were met as promised and, if anything, I was the one holding things back from moving even quicker. We were very satisfied with the whole process.”
Accurate Hours, Better Attendance and Payroll Cost Savings
Carrington decided to install RosterLive’s biometric terminals to help capture more accurate information on employee attendance and eliminate the need for labour-intensive paper timesheets. Augustin noted this resulted in a number of process improvements when using RosterLive:
“The biometric terminals are great because you know staff will be paid accurately based on the hours they were at work. Before, we had staff arriving late and filling in timesheets inaccurately. Now with the finger scanners (Biometric Terminals) in use, punctuality has improved and staff have to be physically on site to clock in - they can’t have others clock in for them.
RosterLive has undoubtedly helped us make a significant saving on our annual payroll costs. I’m a lot more confident staff are being paid accurately now, especially as the award interpretation in RosterLive takes away the risk of human error when calculating payroll.”

After 18 months, Augustin reported that the RosterLive support team have been on hand and available for queries from Carrington users:
